Unit 4: Modernism

1.)ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

I had alot of trouble with this standard because it was kind of difficlt to find evidence for the things i read. It made no since, so how was i suppose to find a good supporting evidence if i didn't understand what was going on in the passages.

2.)The Jazz Age
I chose the Jazz age because it seemed like it would be a good interesting story. I think the topic of this story would be about Jazz history. Comparing it to other songs to jazz and talking about its history. It should fall under ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

3.) "there are only diamonds in the whole world, diamonds and perhaps the shabby gift of disillusion" was my favorite part because people use to say diamonds were a girls bestfriend and people thouhgt if you had diamonds that you were wealthy but for him to say thatthey are a disilliousion is like saying they are unemportant and meaning less and I agree with that because they are just simple possession.

4.)Richard Corey by Edwin Arlington RobinsonThe poem Richard Corey was very interesting. It talks how rich and charming a man named Richard Corey is. The poor people wants to be just like him so they do their jobs and then all of a sudden Richard goes home and kills himself. This poem is an example of Moderrnism
Mending Wallby Robert FrostThe wall is is always getting broken and every year The narrator and The neighbor is always fixing the wall. The narrator didn"t understand the purpose of the wall, and the neighbor replied" Good fences makes Good neighbors". The narrotor thought the neighbor was Dillusionment because of he thought they barely knew each other. In the end by building the wall they really had a chance to communicate.
A Dream Deferredby Langston HughesThis poem is an example of Dillusionment. It is talking about a dream. A dream that is put away for later. Then he starts to ask what happens to people who dreams an put them awy.Example:Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet?
The Negro Speaks of Rivers by Langston HughesThis poem is based more on The Harlem Renaissance, because he basis of how his people have been here for the longest. He talks says "I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins." All that the Africans were the first to be around and that most people don't recongnize that.
Incident by Countee Cullen This poem poem to me is relly hard for me to notice what it is. I think it would be Dullisionment because he went to Balitomore and didn't expect what happend to happen. "Now I was eight and very small,And he was no whit bigger,And so I smiled, but he poked out His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."

5. Review your response to number 1 in this unit. Then explain how you have addressed the Georgia Performance Standard you said was a challenge for you. You should support this claim with evidence from your own work.I learned a new word and by reading examples and talking to others to make me understand the word better. By doing these things it has tought me how to inderstand the standard ELAALRC3 The student acquires new vocabulary in each content area and uses it correctly better.

"The Raven"

The raven was over all a good poem. It uses good elements to amplify the mood of the poem. After looking over the video again I got a better understanding of what his poem really about. It was about a man who was full of sorrow after losing his wife to death. The name The Raven was I think was Poe's own conscious and he was really asking himself all those questions.

Which side of the divide do you fall?

My argument would have to be that everything is not gods doing like the Transcendentilists believed, because everyone is not a good person. I believe that no body's perfect and its because of adam and eve's faults.

Short Review

1.)Original sin is said to be the condition of sin that marks all humans as a result of Adam and Eve's first act of disobedience.

2.)TheTranscendentalists believed that people were very good and that people could not be evil because god was always there for them.

"Unit Three"

ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.

I think this standared is sayin that we will be talking about ideas and parts of the text deling with poems and technical documents. I think i would have to be able to understand my work better in order to meet this particular standard.

The video was a very good example of Transcendentalism because the man was one with nature. He believed that it was just him and god and the animals. Something I thought was very cool was he lived out in the woods for 35 years by himself. An example from the text by Ralph Waldo Emerson is, “to go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society.” What he is saying in this is that you should go outside to think and talk to god. Because when you are with people it’s too much going on.

Nature is a good example of Transcendentalism Because they believed that if you was to go out into nature that you could talk to god because its just you and him. They didn’t believe in sin because everyone was good. One good example is "standing on the bare ground-my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space- all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball. I am nothing. I see all."

Sel-Reliance is a good example of Transcendentalism because it talks about how man should depend on them selves and not society. The Transcendentalism believed that humans mind was one of the most powerful instruments in the world. They thought the same way. You should only depend on yourself. Your interself is a powerful thing and thats what you should listen to.
